      Rooftop terrace design ideas

Those lucky people having a rooftop to enjoy (not only) the summer in the city, here are 8 rooftop terrace design ideas to extend your living space to the outside.

Think about how you want to use that space. In this post, we’ll explore various rooftop terrace design ideas that cater to different needs and tastes. Whether you’re aiming for a serene garden, a lively entertainment area, or a child-friendly space, we have tips and inspirations to help you make the most of your rooftop.

Consider your space’s physical aspects, intended use, and your budget to guide your choices. Don’t forget – a roof top is to be used and enjoyed! Whether you’re in the heart of the city or the outskirts, a well-designed rooftop terrace can offer an escape from the everyday.

      1. Outdoor rugs

Outdoor rugs are a great option to make a rooftop more cozy and also to refocus attention away from less beautiful flooring if there isn’t already gorgeous decking or the budget to install it. They are quite durable, weather proof and not very expensive. Go for a clean sisal / jute rug or layer bohemian style. They can really have a great impact on your rooftop terrace design.

      2. Rooftop garden

Who doesn’t love a lush outdoor space, a beautiful rooftop garden? Greenery almost equals beauty, but remember: plants and pots are not cheap. Also, keep in mind the temperatures and plan accordingly. If you don’t want to splurge massively on plants, think about buying and planting the seeds and wait for the chosen plants to grow. Sometimes people also give away plants when moving to a new city for example. Or opt for bamboo and pampa grass – both durable, easy to grow fast and does not break the bank. Upcycle old wood or vegetable baskets and use them to grow plants in. Add some color using lavender or other gorgeous plants.

      3. Outdoor furniture

Add some furniture according to your priorities. You want to entertain? Get an outdoor dining table and chairs, a BBQ or even an outdoor kitchen if your roof top isn’t short for space. You prefer to lounge? – Get a cozy outdoor sofa or sun beds.

      4. Accessorize your roof top

Accessorise your rooftop: Never underestimate what great effect small details make. For rooftop decor use fairy lights, lanterns, blankets and cushions to set the mood. Choose accessories matching the style you most want: clean, bohemian, minimal or else and decorate accordingly. For a romantic outdoor space, add fairy lights and lanterns with candles; for a bohemian look add boho cushions and a rug.

      5. Privacy

For some privacy use plants, wooden screens (some can even be planted), or sun sails, which are more charming options for a rooftop terrace than a regular fence.

      6. Winter Wonderland

If you live in a cooler hemisphere: think about installing a whirlpool and / or fire-pit on your rooftop so you can use the space more intensively during colder months.

      7. To the movies on the roof top

You are a fan of movie / game nights, and want to go all out, an outdoor screen may be a great option for you. This certainly is one of the great rooftop terrace design and use ideas.

      8. Child-friendly roof top

Should you have small children, safety is the priority. Ensure there are no horizontal climbing structures. Get a play area, like a small sand pit, a slide and/or a small inflatable swimming pool. Use LED lanterns instead of candles. Ensure there is sufficient shade for children to spend some daytime hours.

Transforming your rooftop into an enviable retreat is all about blending functionality with style. Whether it’s hosting dinners under the stars, cultivating a lush garden, or creating a cozy corner for relaxation, the possibilities are endless. From durable outdoor rugs to enchanting lighting, each element contributes to a personalised outdoor haven. Remember, a rooftop is not just an area but a lifestyle extension, so tailor it to your dreams and practical needs.

      Smart buys

Ready to make your rooftop terrace summer (or winter) ready? Start by adding these must-have items to your Amazon shopping list and begin your transformation journey today!

If you need any similar Amazon links to a specific country, feel free to contact me.

I actually bought this outdoor sisal carpet myself for our roof terrace and love it. Benuta and Ruggable also have lovely outdoor carpets – in so many different styles and sizes.

I also recently purchased this Nämmarö table set at Ikea – I added some nice cushions and lanterns on the table of course. Also, I found this small patio bistro set for smaller spaces – look at the fabulous color options, just add some candles and a small plant and you’re all set.

And if you do love to entertain, have a look at this is a fabulous Weber grill for those unforgettable evenings with friends.

I am a big fan of H&M home – look at their outdoor soft furnishings, like these outdoor cushions. They also have beautiful blankets for cooler summer nights and other pretty decorative and useful items. I found a similar product on Amazon, a set of two gorgeous weatherproof striped outdoor cushions.

For some romantic atmosphere, have a look at those gorgeous table lanterns from H&M home. Add some large standing outdoor floor lanterns from Amazon too – these are a rather clean style, but the options are plentiful.

Lastly, you can never go wrong with gorgeous (and baby/toddler/child-friendly) outdoor fairy lights.
